Staple of the short, warm season grass prairie, Little bluestem is an 18-24″ bunch grass.  In summer to fall, hues of blue, maroon, and purple emerge as the inflorescence rises on slender stems to 3′.  From fall to winter, the color fades to a beautiful tan as fluffy seed heads emerge for wind dispersal and as excellent bird food. Host plant to a number of skippers, and tolerant of full sun and a wide range of soils.
